Announcing the Internet of Things World Forum Hackathon Winners

From October 10 to 12 , in 1871 venue, Cisco hosted a competitive 24 hours hackathon (#IoTWFHack), produced by Monkeybars, one of the startups at 1871. More than 100 hackers on 15 teams competed to develop a creative solution using one or a combination of four software platforms developed by Cisco, including Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX); Data in Motion (DMO); Cisco Instant Connect (CIC); and IOx application development platform. They also had access to Cisco 819 ISR routers.

The teams’ solutions were judged based on practicality, creativity, design, and how they used the technologies.

The winners of the 2014 Internet of Things World Forum Hackathon are:

1st place – Fleetmatics: Real time supply chain inventory management application. This application would make use of Cisco's DMO and IOx app platform to track fleets/ inventory. Combined with Cisco Instant Connect enables drivers to communicate with customers or their control center.

  • Rajaram Krishnamurthy (Master in Computer Science from IIT).
  • Vengalathur Srikanth Kashyap (Graduate student - Computer Engineering at IIT)

2nd place – Geoanimanics: made use of Cisco's CMX to build an application that would locate and track mobile to be used in retail stores or restaurants to enable live reports of the number of people at a specific location, as well the amount of time spent by a person at the specified location.

  • Yasemin Gokce (MIT electrical engineering and computer science graduate) and
  • Ellie Day (Tech Director for TransTech)

3rd place – Simon Says Alot: Application made use of Cisco's DMO to build a prototype for public transportation looking to streamline passenger boarding at train stations in open platforms. Passengers will be signaled via color lights (red-yellow-green) which cars are full, moderately occupied or empty.

  • Jesse Furmanek (recent law graduate from De Paul University) and
  • Cory Schnepper (3rd year Computer Engineering undergraduate at Illinois Institute of Technology)
